Your employee value proposition is just words… until you bring it to life. An effective EVP is a combination of understanding your employees, your organisation's culture, values and practices - and then designing an EVP that fits your objectives.
Your company's EVP is the message you send to current and future employees about what it's like to work for your brand. In other words, it's a big deal. An EVP gets to the heart of why your business exists and why your employees come to work each day. Sure, part of it is about pay, benefits and security. But if these were the only reasons, your best employees wouldn't last very long.
The first step to creating a compelling EVP is understanding what makes your employees thrive in their role and journey in your organisation. You need to think through what is your organisation's purpose and cascade that through to what is the employee's purpose as well.
That's where we start. However, a thoughtful, well-executed EVP isn't one single action. It's an accumulation of experiences, emotions and interactions. More to the point, it's a promise of what you'll do for your employees when they give their best each day. Your EVP should sum up the essence of your brand, authentically reflecting who you are and what you offer as an employer. A great employee value proposition should be infused into every aspect of your business. It should be obvious to future employees on your corporate website, in social media posts and external marketing campaigns. It must be part of every sales pitch, every customer interaction, every communication between managers and employees. It needs to be present from a candidate's first interview to their last day on the job — and everything in between. It should be created with the same care and effort that's devoted to your Customer Value Proposition (CVP).
An EVP designed well will attract the right employees — those that fit into your culture. From there on, if you engage them in emotionally powerful ways, they will remain supremely motivated and loyal to their work. A successful EVP will show up in the stories your employees tell their friends and families. It will appear on job review sites from past employees. It will be what you'e known for among your customers.
